Elias Ayli, DO

Dr. Elias Ayli, Dermatologic Oncologist with Wake Skin Cancer Center

Born and raised in a small town in northern New Jersey, Dr. Elias E. Ayli is a fellowship-trained Mohs micrographic and reconstructive surgeon who was awarded an academic scholarship to attend Villanova University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology.  He received his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he was inducted into the honorary Sigma Sigma Phi service fraternity, was distinguished for obtaining the highest cumulative GPA in pathology, and graduated at the top of his class.  After graduation, the National Institutes of Health granted Dr. Ayli a post-doctoral research fellowship in cutaneous oncology at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine to study the role of signaling molecules in keratinocyte growth, differentiation, and tumor development. Dr. Ayli presented this research at a number of scientific meetings including the Society for Investigative Dermatology, European Society for Dermatologic Research, and the International Society for Investigative Dermatology. In addition, he published his research in numerous scientific journals, including the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology, Experimental Dermatology, and Giornale Italiano di Dermatologia E Venereologia.

Following this fellowship, Dr. Ayli served his medical internship and dermatology residency at the University of Cincinnati.  After residency, he completed his Mohs Micrographic and Dermatologic Oncology fellowship in Georgia, under the direction of Dr. David E. Kent, a nationally renowned Mohs micrographic and reconstructive surgeon. During his fellowship, Dr. Ayli received extensive training in Mohs micrographic and facial reconstructive surgery, as well as cosmetic dermatology, including the use of lasers, fillers, chemical peels, tumescent liposuction, and botulinum toxin.

After this fellowship and prior to his arrival in North Carolina, Dr. Ayli spent over four years serving patients of Pensacola and the Gulf Coast region under the auspices of Dr. William B. Henghold, a prominent Mohs micrographic and reconstructive surgeon. He has performed nearly 15,000 Mohs surgical cases, has acquired expertise in advanced facial reconstructive surgery and the treatment of aggressive skin tumors, and is one of only a handful of Mohs surgeons in the country to utilize Mohs micrographic surgery for the treatment of melanoma.

Dr. Ayli has published extensively in the dermatology, dermatologic surgery, and dermatopathology literature and has co-authored a chapter in the authoritative textbook, Lever's Histopathology of the Skin.
